As usual, fans began flowing through the TPC Scottsdale gates at 7 a.m. local time. However, as the day went on, the stadium filled up quickly, and many people failed to get their tickets scanned before entering. Social media users posted videos of themselves on the course, showing them doing crazy stuff like sliding on the slopes, flipping into bunkers, and mudslinging.

The WM Phoenix Open was forced to close the gates at roughly 2:00 p.m. as a result.

To put you in the know: At the WM Open, the sixteenth hole defies every golf regulation. The par-3 is completely surrounded by stadium-style stands where spectators are welcome to yell, pound drinks, and hoot. When they get to the sixteenth tee, even golfers want to have fun.

However, 2024 at the WM Open may have been the most boisterous to yet. Owing to a large number of aggressive intoxicated individuals, the event organizers prohibited alcohol sales on Saturday and blocked access to the course.

a statement on X that read:

“Due to larger than usual crowds, the WM Phoenix Open entrance gates are temporarily closed and shuttle service to the event is on hold. Shuttle service back to parking lots will remain running. Regularly check our channels for updates.”

For the following few hours, supporters chanted, “We want beer!” in protest of the alcohol restriction.

The People’s Open, formerly known as the WM Phoenix, has a long history of crazy supporters, particularly on the TPC Scottsdale’s 16th-hole grandstand. Although drunken crowds have gone crazy before, the organizers found it nearly impossible to control this time.

The bad weather on Thursday caused the golf times to be delayed, and the frost disrupted the Friday round. As a result, on all three days, there were unfinished rounds. On the last day at the TPC Scottsdale, the participants will now have to play up to 30 holes.
